Running Luce Ranch breeding objectives are focused on priorities that are selected to align with the performance objectives for the commercial rancher. Our focus is on raising Brangus cattle which will impact the bottom line for the cattlemen who choose us for their replacement bulls and heifers. We are also happy to support future ranchers with show cow prospects which will compete in any show ring.
“Ready to Work” Bulls
Running Luce Ranch Bulls are “Ready to Work”! Our bulls are finished on natural forage in large traps requiring them to travel for their forage. RLR bull calves that are selected to finish for sale are finished on natural forage with the free choice Accuration supplement needed to support optimal development. From wean weight until target sale age (18-24 months) Running Luce Ranch “Ready to Work” Bulls are building the stamina and endurance needed to perform.
The Our top priority for our registered Brangus cattle is to produce Structurally Sound, Moderate-Framed Brangus Cattle with good Maternal Instincts and Exceptional Conformance.
Secondly, we target the EPDs (expected progeny differences) which have the most significant impact on the rancher’s bottom line; Low Birth Weight, Calving Ease, and Weaning Weight. These EPDs are prioritized in order to prevent value loss associated with a lost calf/cow at birth while optimizing weaned calf revenue at the sale barn.
Lastly, we work to retain balance in all EPDs and improve overall performance without compromising our priorities. This is accomplished by preferentially selecting animals and genetics to infuse into our heard which meet our priorities while improving the Fertility Index* and Terminal Index** . The use of the Fertility Index and Terminal Index allows us to evaluate the overall performance benefits prior to selecting the animals or genetics we incorporate and retain in our herd.
* Fertility Index combines Heifer Pregnancy, Days to Calving, Stayability, Calving Ease, Mature Cow Weight, Scrotal Circumference Ultrasound Fat Thickness, Birth Weight and Milk.
** Terminal Index combines Heifer Pregnancy, Days to Calving, Stayability, Calving Ease, Mature Cow Weight, Scrotal Circumference Ultrasound Fat Thickness, Birth Weight and Milk.
To sum it up, the ultimate aim of our breeding and finishing programs is to provide top-performing superior registered Brangus cattle that deliver long-term gains for your ranch!
